That is good news gentlemen-here's hoping we all make it there.
Crushed stone....slightly wide tires. No to road ties probably esp. if it rains. I think 35c and up so cyclocross up to around 45c. I plan to ride on 40c, Schwalbe Marathon Duremes...been testing them last 3 rides over last w weeks tubeless and so far so good.

My only worry (aside from finances) is the pace. How fast do you usually travel on the flat? Personally, I tend to average in the 12 to 14 MPH range, which is fairly slow.

I think that's a pretty average touring pace. As far as I'm concerned, if we're not racing(I don't), why rush it. An easy pace with plenty of stops for sightseeing is how I like to tour.

At 12 mph it only takes 5 to 6 pedaling hours to make 60 miles. You've got all day, so might as well enjoy it.

12-14 is not slow per my standards.....
I've averaged 9-11 on most of the rails to trails I've done in the last 8 or 9 months and all but the Silver Comet/Chief Ladiga were crushed stone. On the Silver Comet even with 20-22 pounds of kit on the bike you can average 16 easily.
So I'm planning on actual saddle time 4-5 hours per day crusing along at the above with 3-4 hours of a mix of napping in the hammock, exploring a winery, finding some historical marker, and so on.

    Okay. Thanks, guys!

I was worried about that; most of the folks on the local rail-trail who aren't just out for a short spin usually move faster than I do.

    Anyway, here's hoping!

    We're looking at this

A co-worker & I are looking at doing Katy right after the college lets out. We are interested in going both ways - going WB then returning. We may run into all of you for the return trip if all goes well.

Does anyone have experience hanging/camping on the Katy?
I hate going to the ground!

Not to hijack this thread but did you hang on the Silver Comet & Chief Ladiga?
I've been looking at their websites and only see one camping spot along the trail (not the commercial rv parks).

Yes we hung at Camp Comet...kinda roughly in an estimating kinda way about half-way. It is an official campsite for the trail--no amenities as in water or facilities of any kind but easing hanging, tent pads, and a fire ring--perfect for quite a few hammocks. It was bit hard to find-well any riders we saw never heard of it, but if you look in the general area you'll see a GIANT sign that says 'Camp Comet'...now back to the Katy Trail and riding in the footsteps of Lewis & Clarke! It's not that far away now.
