If it's Down, be sure to sew your new line before you cut off the hood or zipper... makes a lot less mess!
John, did you note what weight savings you got from cutting off the zipper and hood on that bag? I'm considering doing this but I don't want to hack up my bag for only 4 oz of savings (which would be about 10% of the bag weight). I use my bag just like a quilt already with the zipper an hood, haven't had any problems with zipper snagging on the hammock, thought I've used a pad up to now for the most part, so that could be a problem with 1.0 hammock fabric now that I'm going to use an UQ. Don't want to ruin a $150 hammock because I didn't want to ruin an $80 bag.

This was more a comfort issue than weight. The heavyweight zipper was digging into my legs, the draft collar and hood were just in the way... I was also concerned with the zipper tearing the hammock body.

Overall weight savings was about 6 oz. The new weight is 32oz.

To cut off you hood sew two lines of tread about 5-10mm apart along the line you wish to remove it (use a sharpie to mark it first) then cut between those seams that way you will not cover yourself in down! Plus once you have hemmed the quilt also hem the hood, add a strip of hook/loop or a snap at the neck and you can wear the hood separate in colder weather.

Then do the same to the zip (you may be able to just unpick it) and roll over the hem (grosgrain will add extra weight/cost) you may want to bar tac the bottom of the zip slit to reinforce the foot box. And your done!
