    Mummy bag to TQ questions

hey, so I have a mummy bag id like to turn into a TQ since im fat and sleeping bags dont work so well in hammocks.

so, tell me if im wrong here: basically cut the zipper and hood off and sew the open ends? then i would use the bag essentially sideways? yes?

Yep, I think that's the basic idea. If the bag (zipper attached) offers a foot-box that your happy with, then great. If not, you may need to sew the sides together, until the foot-box is created.

    Good luck.

I don't use it sideways....just pull it up and go to the Land of Nod. Use like a quilt.

I just unzip mine about 3/4 of the way down, slide my feet in and wrap the rest around me. I have kept the zipper on in case I am forced to ground I can still use it as a traditional sleeping bag.

not to hijack the thread, Wizards, do you find the zipper troublesome? either getting cold like is is right now up here in the tundra, or rubbing on you while you sleep? I toss about a bit in my hammock, so I zip up all the way in mine.

So, you have a side zipper on your bag?

We use the military patrol bags, zipper is in the middle and I just unzip down (they already have a foot box so it doesn't unzip clear to the bottom) I put it on top of me, stick my feet in the foot box, and throw the rest over the top of me, sticking the sides under my shoulders. The zipper doesn't bother us, but I will be removing it eventually as I don't see the need for it, and it will weigh less. If you have a side zip...then same idea, but yes, you'd be sort-of using it sideways. If your going to be in cold areas...I'd leave the hood on. If it's really cold we throw the hood over our face, if it's not really cold, we maneuver it to the side and use as a pillow.

I'd lay on the floor with your bag unzipped and put your feet in it and throw it over the top of yourself to see what you have, where your adjustments need to be, if you really need to cut the zippers off, and if the hood will still work on it.

I miss my army center-zip mummy bag!! So much easier to deal with venting, getting in and out, all of it. Civvie center-zip bags are almost nonexistent.

You're not fat - you're just too short for your weight!!

I have not had any issues with cold zippers or irritation from the zipper. I tend to sleep with it this way even if on the ground just for more room and comfort. I may unconsciously shift it in the night but not that I am aware of.

shug i think i wasnt clear when i said sideways. the bag has a zipper ( i think left side) and if i cut it off, i would rotate it till the area where the zipper was is under me. and it does have a sorta foot box already!
