    I'm a BIG noob...

    Hey guys,

I'm new to the hammock world, but I'm also intrigued and willing to dive in. That being said, I'm a youth pastor with a wife and three kids (meaning I cannot afford retail stuff)...so DIY, here I come!

I know there are a lot of tutorials for hammocks on here, and I know I could throw one together (the DIY stretch side will probably be #1 for me), the question I have is on the material for my size. As I said in the subject title, I am a BIG noob, both experiencially and physically. How big? I am 6'4" and little over 300 lbs (what? I'm "big-boned"...lol).

So, the question is, should I use 1.9 Risptop, a double layering of 1.1 Ripstop, or some other setup? I'd like it lightweight, but I would also like to feel comfortable knowing that I'm not going to bust open the hammock and/or my buttocks.

Also, on the size of the material...being tall and broad, what material measurements would you recommend for me to make a gathered end/stretch side hammock?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    -Kyle "Wookie" B.

1.7 or 1.9 double layer, 11' long. Check out the Wilderness Logics Nite Owl. It's a double layer 1.5. Yu'll need something like that hammock, dimesions and all.

The Night Owl looks like exactly what I need! They said something about a "26 inch opening for a pad"...that sounds like a cool feature. Do you know where/how they leave that opening?

I'm probably going to head to Gainsville, SC next Thursday to pick up some material.

Here are instructions for a WBBB clone that is very well documented. It is a different style than what you said you wanted to start with, but it does have good information on the double layer that you want. Take a look at the attached PDF file.

Another good write up that may be useful:

@liveoak, thank you from NE GA. I was just in Tennesee last week, I took our local cub scouts to the Gatlinburg Aquarium for "sleeping with the sharks"...fun time!

Check out diygearsupply.com, they have turtorials/plans for a gathered end double layer hammock with a pad "pocket" opening. Plus Scott is a great help if you have questions and you can buy your supplies from him as well. When my hammock was made, thank you sweets, these plans were used and I am very comfortable in it. I am 6'1" and 300 lbs and sleep very comfortably in the 1.9DL.

    Welcome from Cumming, Ga

I am in your area (at Rainey Mountain Scout Reservation) often.

@bigbamaguy, thanks for the link! Easy to follow plans (color-coded is nice!) and it is good to have another 300 pounder weigh-in (Lol) on the reliability of the 1.9DL.
