"Braided Masons line" will work. I have seen rolls of it in "Home Hardware" (canadian) something like 200' on a roll cost $20.00 CDN.
It is a very common material, it is used by bricklayers to ensure they lay the blocks straight and square! I am sure Homedepot will have it, they likely also have bulk rolls of different grades of rope/line!

Braided mason line is cheap at homedepot and the like. But, make sure it's BRAIDED not TWISTED!!

As to length, I use 6' on one side and 10' on the other. The longer side can be set up in porch mode and it's also handy if you pitch on the side of a mountain to have the longer lines on the downhill side.

+1 on the small loop of shock cord on the tarp tie-outs if it's a silnylon tarp.

You can get a spool of 500' from Home Depot for 12.00, it's called braided mason line. Not twisted. Braided.

Wow awesome info. I'm using the twisted twine you get for tying stuff on top of your car. Some pieces are too short ine to long. Def. Going to get this tomorrow.

There's a million threads where I could post the following question, so I just sorta chose to resurrect this one

Quite a few people mention using loops of shock cord. I'm also planning on using a small loop of shock cord on each corner of my tarp, then running zing-it from that to the stake. But what size is the best?

Does 1/8" with about 100% stretch sound good? (loop about 4-6" diameter)

X2 This is exactly what I do. I also recently discovered doing a marlin spike hitch on the stakes. Sooo much faster to set up and take down or adjust your tarp. When I read this on a thread recently, it was one of those "duh" moments for me. I had been tying adjustable knots at each stake and it took way too much time. The loops of shock cord really hold the tension as well.

Yeah I just learned about that knot in one of Shugs videos (I really gotta start learning knots)...shepherds hook stake slides right off and knot comes out for east tear down! I like ground hog stakes, but take a few seconds longer to pick the knot loose.
