So I want to start some DIY with webbing but the wife thinks her sewing machine won't cut it. It isn't anything special but also not the cheapest thing out there. So I am seeking any input or knowledge on what should be enough to put together some new tree huggers.
I just used a large needle and nylon thread from zipper repair kit to sew a double "Z" pattern to make a loop. It's easy and very strong and no worries to break anything.

Many do double X box stitches, others bar-tacks, some even straight stitches along the length of the overlap... I've tried many methods, and none have failed me yet...

Webbing is really not that big a challenge for a machine. It is really rather pourous compared to some high density nylon pack cloth. So new sharp denim needle. Normal thread is fine for all practical purposes as long as it is new and high quality 100% polyester. As far as the machine goes... you should be able to deal with any issues that come up if you pay close attention to the sound of the motor and avoid any lugging or stalling. If worst comes to worst you can always turn the fly wheel by hand and save any wear and tear on the motor. The mechanics of the machine should be more than a match for the webbing.
On the other hand... maybe it is time to convince the wife that she needs a new machine... that way you can have her old one. Or if you are really daring... tell her you need your own so "nothing awful happens to yours."

Bobbin Tension - A Personal Viewpoint
I got a brothers mini machine and I stitched up some straps 3 days ago. I have found that if I try to make more than 4 passes it gets thick and my machine stutters and I have broken needles. this was making the X. I have found it much easier on my machine if I make bar 4 or 5 bar tacks.

I use a cheap low end Singer machine and it does fine on webbing.
I've strained sewing machines more when shortening the legs on Levi's.
The wife just doesn't want you to play with her toys.
