Thanks. I'm just getting into hiking and hanging so I honestly don't know what my pack weight is yet since I'm still collecting. Once I get the bag ill see a bit more what will work. Could the uq suspension run from left to right then up to my hammock suspension. It won't slide up and down and I could maybe tighten it closer to me while holding it up? I don't know where the gaps will be yet. Can't wait to get this bag and find out what works! Also are there local stores where I would find shockcord 1/8 or so?

I believe hammoch gear makes them at 45" wide, which to me seems to be plenty to cut out an additional 2.5" per side. If its meant for winter, I might prefer the little extra width though.

GLP knows his quilts, I trust him.

his avatar also notes he's been cold and i'd rather give food for thought now rather than having him cut fabric and realize a mistake.

if his decision to make it 40" is due to weight, which we all know G.L.P you're pretty hardcore UL, we're not sure if joemcc is so it might be a little wiser to add a little safety factor in there.

good luck with your quilts joemcc
i'm only stating that being there 40" they will not slide off other UQ makers use quilts the same size or very close... i don't think your post was called for ...and is very rude i don't remember saying anything in my original post about UL ? that and my post is gives light to any questions he might have with 40" UQ's since he asked about that said length .... sorry you feel that way

My DIY uq is 38" wide. It works very well for me at this size.

I had orginally targeted my DIY UQ at 44" wide. It turned out that it ended up 41" due to my awesome sewing skills (don't ask me how I got a 46" wide piece of fabric to be 5" narrower with 1" seam allowance)

However, it works great for me. I'm 5'11" and 185 lbs, and the quilt wraps around me very well in my hammock. A lot of it depends on how wide YOU are. You can adjust the quilt using Dutch's quilt hooks, triangle thingies, a loop of cord over the ridgeline (if you have one), or even by using heavier shock cord. Add some tabs to the end and sides of the quilt, and you'll be able to dial it in even more.

In short, I think you'll be fine with 40" wide, depending on your body size and adjustments.

Lol yeah I'm hoping that doesn't happen to me. I need every inch. I have thought about making loops from ripstop and sewing on the sides to run my shockcord through. I won't lose much for sewing channels.

You wouldn't need to add extra loops of ripstop. You can simply sew a wider rolled hem and run your shock cord through that. I used grosgrain because it gives a cleaner look in my opinion. I added a few grosgrain loops along these channels in case I need some more fine tuning ability.

My 40" wide quilts are the finished size.
When I figure out the width of the fabric to cut, after adding all seam allowances, I still add another 5%. Somewhere in the process that 5% disappears.
