No scissors. Just gently remove the sleeves at the seam with a seam ripper. There should be a seperate set of stitches (3 total, one for the coat section, one for the arms section and another stitch line joining the two together) Figure out which stitch joins em and remove carefully.
You'll have a pair of down sleeves when done.
For a quick test (prior to destroying the stitches,and hence the coat) just pull them inside the coat and hang it from the hammock.

If it is a zipper type, why not just remove the sleeves as Gargoyle suggested, close the openings, then use it as a pod over your foot end?.

Your so funny...that was a good way to acquire a down coat. Would it be terribly wrong for me to give bad comments to everyone in my family who has a down coat???
I'd want the sleeves to use like Shug does. On my arms if needed, over my legs if needed, on my feet if needed, shoved in the back of my pants for CBS if needed, and so many other uses.
Your on a roll, keep collecting those down coats in the name of hanging
I have an old down parka from Cabela's that I kept after I melted a hole in one sleeve (woodstove). It looks funky with a piece of Gorilla tape as a patch, and I've since picked up a better parka. Inspired by wi1ecoyote, I'm dismantling the old one. First, I've removed the sleeves. Next I'll shorten them a bit (removing the damaged cuff on one) and attach to my down booties. At Mt. Rogers Joey had a pair of Flamethrower booties that Paul had attached leggings to, sort of knee-high down socks. They looked just the thing for cold-weather sleeping. Then I'll follow this thread to see what other good ideas come up for the rest of the parka. It would make a vest, as is, but I don't need one right now. I could enlarge the arm holes so it would fit Bonaparte as a dog coat, but I've already done that with another old vest. (It makes him look like an armadillo, but he's not fashion-conscious.) I like the UQ mod, but will wait to see if it needs to be reshaped.

how about i just take my parka as is and run a cord through the sleeves and attach the cord to or over the hammock? Extend the draw cords of the jacket to attach the lower part to the hammock. Or use the parka as a substitute for a PL in a UQ? The parka seems pretty heavy, but probably not much heavier than other UQ's. I'm serious about this, if it makes sense.
Well, I'm gonna have to make my dog Peanut a down dog coat out of an old vest. Great idea, WV. Peanut is five years old with four bad disks - he's been okay for a couple of years but this winter he apparently developed some arthritis in his back during the coldest months, January & February.
