Do you guys ever worry about snakes, and other critters?

I'm new to hammock camping, and i'm on the verge of buying my first; the only thing hampering my decision on which to get is the fact that some are open (Eno, wildernss logics, etc...), and some close off (Warbonnet, Hennessey, etc...).

Price plays a role also. I have to buy 3 hammocks in all for myself, my wife, and my son. I tried an Eno, and loved it, but I'm in the south (TN) and spring and summer will soon be here, and so will the snakes!

Don't hike with worry....it will wreck your jaunt.
Remember that you are going into their domain to hang, camp and enjoy.
Never had a snake crawl down my hammock suspension but...........I hope I have a camera going if it happened.
Use bug-net zipped up if it truly is a concern.
    Carry forth.

I generally clump around loudly enough that nothing wants to be near me and at night I'm so tired I don't care.

+1 on the bugnet for piece of mind and for keeping your quilts inside the hammock and for keeping the most voracious, mean and hungry critters in the forest, mosquitoes, away from you!

You'll most likely have some sort of tarp above you as well. So I am not concerned with them dropping from the tree above.

I was much more concerned when tent camping.

You have a point, I think i'll go with the eno, to get us out sleeping in the woods, and upgrade if needed at a later date.

Love the bluegrass music in your vids, shug.

Not so much a worry in the hammock. But I shake the boots in the morning to make sure the spiders and other critters didn't take up a hotel suite for the night. I do have a dream every now and then about bears running underneath and spinning me around like a pinata.

I live in Georgia and go hiking, backpacking and camping with our Boy Scout troop. I have an ENO as well, with a tarp and bug net and haven't had a problem with snakes. I've seen a couple of snakes on the trail, but I've never had a problem with them dropping in on me. Haven't really seen any snakes in any of the places we have camped either - could be all the noise and fun the scouts are having scares all the critters away. Like Turtle Creek said, I was more concerned about snakes when I slept in my tent.

3 ENO's with bug nets should work great for you and your family.

Get at least 1 large tarp (11x8) so if the weather turns bad the three of you can
wait out the storm together under 1 tarp.

Bug netting a must. Integrated with the hammock is easiest. The least expensive is probably Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter at about $60. If you and/or your wife are good at DIY, Grand Trunk UL at $13 (amazon) would be good plus home made bugnets a la Fronkey

would be a good budget option. You would also need tarps which could be $40 per hammock for a Hennessy minimal asym or $60 for a Hennessy Hex (which I have) which is enormous but heavy for backpacking. Again, if you have sewing skills, DIY may save you some money see:

which also has a good bugnet design. I understand the PapaAmurf will make them for you for a reasonable consideration:-)

I have a Hennessy expedition which is great, but not exactly cheap. At the moment they are offering a child hammock free with purchase, which has to be worth investigating.

The only thing I've had to fight off where skeeters. Have never had a problem with snakes, and trust me I hate ******* snakes. I do shake out the shoes before popping the feet in, but I haven't seen anything fall out them either. I think you'll really enjoy the experience.
