    Swamped Subaru

Had a great time seeing everyone again this year.

I can give an update on Subaru that could not swim.

Saturday night, somewhere around 11pm 2 forum members, 3 of my friends, and I decided to pile into my friend Doug's Subaru and drive to Apple Pie Hill(even though we had access to several lifted 4x4 trucks, because there was more room for passengers).

The path we took to Apple Pie Hill was littered with puddles, and there are several ways to get there that do not involve puddles. Doug got out to walk through the first 2 to make sure the depth was ok. Then we got a little lazy and drove into a really long puddle. Half way though the headlights dipped under water and the Subaru stopped moving and started filling up with water.

We hiked back to camp (only about a mile and half) and grabbed mturner05's Bronco II to come back and make the recovery.

That night and the next morning the Subaru would not start. The ECU is mounted near the floor on the front passenger corner of the car and had been submerged. We tried drying it out for a while but didn't make any progress.

Doug took the ECU home with him so he could pick up another one, we were worried that it was fried. Monday morning Doug picked up a new ECU from a junkyard on his way back to the pines, though he did not end up needing it.

He put the old one back in and it sputtered and started right up. Good as new, just a little soggy. It just needed some time to dry out.

We made some imperfect decisions but we all had a lot of fun.

Here is a link to the youtube video. My favorite part is at 1:25.

The water pouring out when you open the door is hilarious. Maybe not for you, though.

When I saw them towing the Subaru backwards to try and jumpstart it on Sat morning, I had no idea what was happening! That car needs "four-oar drive", not four wheel drive! LOL!

Glad it worked-out eventually. What a trip!
