If I may pipe in here...Organza does not stretch at all. That makes it easier to sew than tulle or mosquito netting. It's not a knit net. (knit net?!!?!) It's a sheer fabric.

Also, if you run the edges over a flame, they won't fray. I would definitely still hem, but, at least they won't fray before you finish. I personally love organza. It's bomb-proof: Super strong, super light-weight and impenetrable by all creepy crawlies.

P.S. Organza can be made of many different fibers. There is silk organza, polyester organza, nylon organza, cotton organza, etc. My experience--and comments--are limited to polyester organza.

Thanks Pips! One more question about Organza. How does it compare to noseeum netting as far as being able to see through it?

That depends on what color you choose, how wrinkled the material is, and how the sun is shining through it. Black is by far the easiest color to see through. When the sun is not directly shining through it, black is virtually transparent (like sunglasses).

Also, organza comes in different "sheens". Sparkle is, well, sparkly. MIRROR organza is the LEAST SPARKLY. I know "sparkly" sounds scary when you're talking about outdoor gear, but mirror organza looks perfectly appropriate for camping gear. It is shiny, but not sparkly. Confused? Go to the fabric store and check out your options. Good luck and let us know what you think about organza.

How much does it stretch compared to the common noseeum netting or to tulle?
Compared to noseeum, it doesn't. Haven't compared to tulle.

Oh, one more source: Ikea... They have polyester net curtains in the kid bedding section... something like $6 for 110"x98" called "LILL" It's white, but spray-dye it anything you want. It's very strong compared to tulle with a slightly tighter weave.

I forgot all about organza. It's awesome. Here are a few of my kid hammocks: first two are organza, third is Joann's white/green camo fashion tulle.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! The gallery is disabled... I'll post them later...

Just last week I made a fully enclosed bugnet with 7yds of noseeum for $21. That pays for itself in 2 seasons compared to the $10 worth of tulle.

While I understand and appreciate the "economics" argument, a few of us like the unrestricted view and airflow, along with the lower weight that tulle provides.
