Last weekend I had the opportunity to hang in colder temps. I should preface this by stating I am a cold weather wimp. I live in the south for a reason. While I respect you guys for tolerating sub freezing temps - it ain't for me!
Anyway, I have a WBBB 1.0 double (which I love) and in the past have used a pad that has been ok but if you get off the pad even a little bit you know it real quick. It's like rolling on to a block of ice!
I finally invested in an underquilt. I took the plunge and bought a full length 20* underquilt (the Incubator) from hammockgear. Guys, it is all that and a bag of chips. I was warm and cozy in my down sleeping bag with that underquilt. It's easy to hook up and adjust from the get go. The quality is also top notch. It really is worth the investment. It may not be ultralight, but it is also not heavy.
Another bit of equipment I invested in was the bear burrito oven from arrowhead. Paul was great in answering my questions and I could tell a definate difference with the BBO. In fact, at one point I was a little warm. For me that is unheard of in cold weather. When I would unzip the BB the air temperature difference was very surprising.
Also, the second night it got down into the high 20's and since my feet always get cold I thought I would try the water bottle trick I have read about. Sheer bliss I tell you. My toes were toasty warm and the nalgene bottle I used (0.5L) was still warm in the am. I was amazed.
So I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank stormcrow at hammockgear and Paul from arrowhead and brag about my experience. If you are a cold sleeper like me, this gear will keep you comfortable into the 20's with no problem.
Now I just have to convince my wife I need a new cuban fiber tarp.
