FFinn, Yeah, Now that I think about it, there is a similarity between day-old hikers and sweaty horses. Close, but not quite. I think the horse may be friendlier to the senses.

Pan, Thanks. And, again, I appreciate your fine products, exceptional service, and obvious concern for the quality of our chosen recreation. I suspect DougTheYounger will get no more use from his like-new tent than I did.

Doug,
Glad to hear the trip went well. I know the last time I was at your office you seemed quite excited. Glad to know your son had a great time aswell. I dont imagine there were many owls hootin' up there were they?

Alex, I thought about trying to call for owls while I was climbing up the trail to Cranberry Peak, but I didn't think "Gasp-Wheeze-Hoot" would get the job done!!!

Wow!~ Beautiful trip!
Can you tell me about that enclosed tarp you have?
Annie, I'll post a picture tomorrow. It's a pretty simple addition to the HH SilNyl hex tarp...just a couple of overlapping triangular shaped pieces sewed to each side of each end. But I think it's the most effort-effective modification that can be added to a hammock system...with the possible exception of the zip-mods offered by 2Q's... It effectively closes off the ends from wind and rain...within reason (read the part of my post about the winds at Horn's Pond Shelter- no doors would have kept that wind out!). Somehow, in my overzealous effort to make sure DougTheYounger would have a positive hammock experience I let him keep my Door-Modified Hex Tarp and I brought his new hex tarp home with me and have spent Father's Day cutting and sewing to bring it up to modern specs. Aside from toasting all the recent Forum Birthday guys, cutting and sewing is not a bad way to spend a stormy weekend afternoon.

Annie, With any luck, there are some pictures of the HH Hex tarp with doors attached. They show the doors tied to the tarp corners, but they can be configured in a lot of different ways. They also add a lot to privacy, if that counts for anything.

So Doug, I have a Speers Winter Tarp, and although it's nice and large, when I close it up, it's pretty tight.
Do you think I could add flaps to it like you did?
Dang! That would be awesome!
What thread do you use to sew nysil?
I added doors to a JRB 11x10 tarp, you should be able to add
them to an SWT. I'd advise making a wide enough hem
on the door material so that you can be sure that when you
sew it to the hem on the SWT you're sewing through both
hems, e.g., multiple layers of material on both the hammock
and the door.
I've got plans in the works for a sort of removable door for both a hex tarp
and rectangular tarp. I hope to have that done with some experience
gained in July.
I use the same thread for silnylon as for other nylon,
polyester thread I got from Speer's, a huge (but now
diminishing) cone of it.
Grizz
Annie, I think I'd follow Grizz's advice on doors on a SWT- my only experience is with the HH Hex. And, yeah, I think polyester thread is the industry standard. One feature that I especially like about my doors is the overlap- it allows for pitching the tarp with different spreads, and it causes the doors to essentially seal around the hammock support lines, and it allows the doors to 'give' with the wind without opening all the way. Beyond that, I'm still fiddlin' with the closure cords at the bottom, but what I have now works pretty well and is adjustable- just more strings, etc than I like. Good luck! Speer has the fabric and the thread- nothin' to it from there. Keep us posted.
