Cheap alternative to cuben for DIY?

I was checking out a kite site after I read a recommendation to use kite line for cordage and found this stuff. Looks like a larger weave ripstop in a mylar sandwich. Sounds like cuben right?

Its only $11/yd and its 0.75oz/yd.

Anybody have experience with this stuff? This could make for a sweet, low price point entry into DIY taping projects! Maybe a summer is in my future

Make sure you are comparing areas correctly. It is my understanding some of the kite suppliers use square yards as opposed to running yards. In other words pricing/square yard would be for a 36 X 36" (1296 square inches). Pricing for a running yard is for 36" X actual width of the fabric. When you are dealing with widths often 60" 36" along the selvage is well more than one square yard. (2160 square inches)
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

This is pretty interesting stuff. Also used in sail making as far as I can tell. Should be durable enough to use for what we do.

This looks like it is for a linear yard 56"wide.

That weight is for a sailmaker's yard, not a square yard. It is ~1.3oz per square yard. Norlam is also not very puncture resistant nor does it pack down as small as silnylon. For the price, silnylon is a better choice.

That Orcon-36 would be closer to what you are looking for. It's extremely light although not very durable. Easily punctured and would only withstand light rain/wind. Only $3 a yard though.

I got this information wrong. As noted above... the weight is what is rated differently (sail makers yard vs linear yard.) Sorry for the mis-information. I don't deal with these supply sources and so did not have the correct information. I knew there was a difference.

There are some pics on here of a tarp someone made out of this stuff. It looked pretty awesome. I would use one if I could sew. I imagine it's not too far off from Spinn.
