They don't have to be, just depends on how beefy of a sock you want. PapaSmurf makes one that is just Momentum 90 and weighs in at 6.52oz and a cheaper one that is made of uncoated 1.1oz ripstop which . This one has no insulation so it solely works on the principle of creating a micro climate around your hammock. Here is the link:

MacEntyre makes some out of canvas and he makes one out of nylon. The nylon one comes in an insulated and non insulated model. It is listed as 16oz but Im not sure which model that is for. Here is the site:

i tested a sock type system last weekend
i made a top cover for the WBBB out of heavy i think 2.9oz 70D ripstop and used a dryduck poncho as my undercover....
with a sock you should get a nice micro climate that will add some warmth
i know in the WBBB there was a noticeable difference in temps from the outside a good 10 degrees but i didn't have any way to get true numbers so don't quote me on the 10 degrees
but a good sock or top cover will make a difference but also will increase the chance of condensation .... i still have some tweaking to do myself
maybe fronkey will chime in he was using a sock from what i remember from his video
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

I have seen a few people use a frost bib with their sock like what Shug uses in his winter videos. I think it would work well since fleece is more likely to hold on to the moisture than have it knocked off when you move. Snowing on your face inside the tarp while you are sleeping is no fun

HAHA I totally understand being a condensation machine! do you just lay your frost bib over your TQ or do you hang it from the RL? Maybe something a little more textured like a microfiber towel will do better.

I have also wondered about something like a vent hole with a light flap cover on the side where your head is. It could make the sock a little less wind proof but it might provide a little more ventilation right where it is needed.

I'm not sure this answer is going to be any help, but I have a canvas hammock sock, I have not used it yet due to the warm temps this winter. When I was in it the other day filming this video, it was quite windy and even without an underquilt etc. it was not cold inside the sock and the sock appeared to be quite windproof. I also have a frost bib that I have used with great success. I plan to use both together as seen in this video.

    Good luck,

I did use a cotton canvas winter sock on my recent -19.8 hang and it was awesome. I didn't even use a tarp while I was out there. Snow just falls off of it and the cold wind just rocks the hammock and you pretty much don't even notice it too.

As for condensation, I didn't really get more than if I wan't using one and I still needed a frost bib. However, on the left side of my sock where my breath had ricochet I got some condensation there. However, it was no big deal.

how much does does canvas sock weigh?

Redoleary, in the video, you said it was 7oz. Is that total weight or 7oz per yard?
