    First trip in the Smokies

Well I finally got the chance to get out and do some hiking in the Great Smokey Mountains. I hit a short trail that led out to a back country campsite. The goal for today was to just get out and eat lunch in the woods. Of course while I was there I had to make a camp fire and practice setting up my hammock and tarp. To my supprise while I was setting up my gear two other hikers came out of the woods and started setting up hammocks also. I introduced myself and asked if they were forum members but neither of them had heard about Hammockforums, so of course I filled them in on what they were missing and took the opportunity to show them my 1.1 DL Blackbird hammock which they both liked. (Hopefully we'll see some new members showing up) I got to use my new water filter and cook some Mountain House lunch with clear mountain stream water (Kind of ironic I thought). Once it to sprinkle I knew it was time to head back to the truck. Overall I must say the Smokies are BEAUTIFULL!!! and any time you get to play with your gear is a good day.

If you are interested in an overnight, let me know. The weather has been wet but warm and I am ready.

I love the Smokies. I haven't had a chance to camp there in years since my wife isn't the camping kind and she won't let me go there without her.
    It'll be alright Friday!

Going back there myself as soon as I get a couple more months of work done. Can't wait. Great place to hike and backpack and hang.

West Prong Trail! I spent many a nights at that campsite in my youth. Is that campsite 18?? Very short, yet strenuous climb on that trail if I remember. AWESOME! campsite, room for many hammocks and a nice river to play in! Boy that just brought back some memories!

Boy do I wish I could get down there more often. The Smokies have always been my favorite place. You have to use designated backcountry campsites, and reserve some of them in advance, but they are worth every footstep IMO.

I hung there last May in the Big Creek area. Mount Sterling (Campsite 38) should not be missed. The old firetower up there is open, and gives outstanding views. It's a heck of a hike up though from Big Creek campground.

For the record, Gatlinburg is one of my least favorite places. I'll only stay in town in order to have access to the park. A bunch of tourists eating ice cream, buying "authentic Cherokee gifts" from junk stores, and throwing food scraps to captive black bears in concrete pits is not my idea of what a national park "gateway" should be.

I have seen two people hike up the Alum Cave trail in flip flops and jeans, with a goal to make it to the LeConte Lodge. They didn't even make it to arch rock before one of them had bloody feet and they turned around.

I'm ranting. I love the Smokies with all of my heart, but they demand respect that 95% of visitors don't give them. Hence the reason for designated sites.

Looks like you had some pretty good weather while you were out there. Nice pics!
