    cold weather sleeping pad

I'm off this week for a 2 night trip in my Warbonnet 1.7. I don't have an UQ and temps should reach 35 or a bit lower. I have a Wiggy's 25 degree bag in the Blackbird. Do you think I would be OK using just a thermarest sleeping pad in my Blackbird. I tend to sleep pretty warm anyway. Thoughts?

A thermorest will work but your shoulders may get a little cold unless you have a pad extender. Or you could try what four dog does. Watch this video. He's even using a moded version of the sleeping bag you have. Your WB bug net will get in the way so you will need a traveler to do his bag mod.

Would the thermarest decrease the hammock feel too much?

Just deflate it a bit and you'll be fine. I put my self-inflating in the hammock fully inflated and just deflate it to a comfortable point when I first lay down. In the summer I just leave the valve completely open. In cooler weather you'll want to be sure to leave some air for insulation.

I think you'll be fine in that weather. Pad slippage is always an issue, but some folks overcome that by putting pad inside sleeping bag.

It does take away from the hammock feel a little and it spreads the fabric out so the hammock isn't hugging you so much. When I was first getting use to a hammock I liked how my Thermarest spread things out. But now I LOVE the cradling feeling I get in my gathered end with an UQ.
One more thing, have your sit pad handy to slide under you if you get a cold back side.

If you have a big 24" wide by 72" thermarest, it's just about right if you get it positioned correctly to start. The nice thing is if you get the inflation right it gets rid of the calf squeeze. Not very packable though.

The typical 20" wide pads will leave your sholders cold.

    Just curious...

As far as pad slippage goes (mine goes into the sleeve on my Big Agnes so no issue there) but I wonder if "butt gripper" (aka: the rubbery stuff you put on the bottom of cabinets... comes in small rolls) would eliminate some of the slippage.
