    Lightbulb hello from northern virginia

Hi, I am Mitey Mo from Manassas, VA. I haven't hanged yet..researching and DREAMING about hiking at least a small portion of the A.T. this spring. It looks like hammock hiking is going to be the way to be kind to my 61 yr old bones Being a woman I would like to make my first hike, at least, with a protective male hiking partner, but the men in my family have gotten too old and cranky and wimpy. I am NOT fishing here, just stating what is making me hesitant. I'm pretty sure it is not going to stop me. I've also been dealing with a very painful case of plantar fasceitis. Almost good as new, now.
Anyway, this forum is a gem for information and help. I'll be checking in often.

Welcome Mitey Mo. Do your homework and fine tune your set up right in your backyard. Finding a group to hang within the NoVA area wont be hard. I have seen a few VA folks trying to coordinate impromptu hangs at Bull Run. Also some folks trying to get together in SNP at some point. You're close to a lot of nice hiking areas! I know some folks may say they are too heavy, but the right pair of boots work wonders for your feet.

Welcome from TN! Keep an eye on the trip planning forum for some hangs to go to near you or at least within a couple hours drive. You will learn lots and meet nice family friendly folks you can trust to hike with. I've met great people here, some I consider good friends! Hope to meet you sometime, It's always great to meet other women doing what I like to do too.

Hi there from Oklahoma! Good on you to dream of the AT. There is a subforum here on long distance hiking and hammocking. It's a great place to meet some potential hiking partners. I too dream of hiking the AT but while I would love to attempt a thru hike I've yet to convince my other half to more than section hikes but I'll take what I can get. Good luck.

Welcome! You're only an hour and 20 minutes away from Gaithland State Park, MD where we hold the annual Fall MAHHA. We average about 40 or more hangers who come for the weekend to meet and exchange ideas about hanging. We hang on the AT near the shelter. Keep a watch for the next one. You'll have fun and learn a ton and have a chance to win an underquilt or other great prizes at the raffle we have during the Saturday night potluck at the park pavilion.

I've met most of my hiking partners at HF hangs. It's a great place to meet people with the same hobby as you. Plenty of AT hikers at the hangs announced on this forum. Good luck.
