    strand counte

    Hello all,

In attempt to make the lightest possible guyline set I have been desperately trying to splice the 1.2mm (8 strand) tech line from DIYgearsupply. Despite using ultra fine wire and reading glasses as mentioned, and numerous attempts; I was having no success. I had almost given up. Then I thought to search for other thin dyneema line. I came across 4 strand (1.2mm) & 6 strand (1.4mm) 350lbs test braided dyneema spearfishing line.

My question is would the fewer strands make the line easier to splice especially in such small diameter? What other concerns should I have if I chose to use this line?

I don't see any downsides. There are specialized tools out there for splicing hollow braid dyneema fishing lines...might be worth a search and a looksee.

Don't give up on it. I have made a couple of adjustable ridgelines (elongated whoopie slings) out of the tech line.

The only problem I encountered was that the line is so stiff that it is very difficult to feed a thin wire tool through it. I learned to "work" short sections at a time to loosen up the constrictor area that I needed to get the tool into. Now I consider the DIY Gear Tech Line to be easy to splice.

Cortland makes a "No-Knot" splicing tool for hollow braids. It looks like a miniature loop turner. I use it on spectra 130 lb. and 200 lb. test lines for my adjustable hammocks, but it can be used on larger cords too. Others have used guitar strings and computer network wire for Dynaglide and smaller diameter hollow braids. Try different things and see what works for you.
