I have been lurking long enough; I figure it is time to introduce myself. I was asked to be the Scoutmaster for my son's troop so I needed to get some gear together. I had gone on a couple of camp-outs with the troop and I realized that the ground has gotten harder as I have grown older. As scoutmaster I will be doing a lot of camping so I looked for a comfortable alternative to being on the ground. Needless to say I found a solution here on HF.
I want to say thanks to the many people who have posted some very valuable information. I have read so many posts and my list of people that I have learned from has grown too long to list. From all this info I was able to get my setup together.
Below is an image of my setup. As my yard does not have any trees I had to make a stand to set it up outside. I have not yet slept overnight in the hammock stand. However I have tested the hammock on a camp-out a couple weeks ago. Other then my toes getting a little cold it was the most comfortable I have ever been camping.
Superfly and DIY Hammock by brianfretz, on Flickr
The tarp is a warbonnet superfly, the hammock is a DIY double layer that I made from a pattern from DIYGearSupply. I ordered an underquilt from HammockGear and it should be here soon. I can hardly wait for my next camping trip.
