March AT Hike in GA - Do I need a TQ?

I am hiking the first 40 miles of the AT with some friends. We wil be hiking late March, through early April. I am not sure what the temperatures are going to be but I suspect 40-50 but likely 30 at the lowest. The plan is to leave Florida early Thursday and get on the trail late afternoon/early evening.

The first year I went my pack weighed 55lbs due to my lack of experience, and because my friend who had done it before. It was rough. I did a longer hike the following year on the next section at 30lbs. I expect to be under 30lb this year but I need to plan accordingly. I am an average temp sleeper. I have a HH Backpacker and a JRB Nest...

Would I be able to manage with just a liner such as this one?

You will most definitely need a top quilt. Plan on temps at night in the 30's. It varies somewhat that time of year, but you will have some cold nights.

You dang right you need one. I have a 20 degree Burrow that I take any time of the year.

Would a 40 degree sleeping bag suffice?

I personally would recommend a 30 degree or lower. There are nights where a cold snap can hit pretty badly that time of year.

Sooo...with the liner (which I already have), a 40 degree would work correct?
Last year I tried hammocking without an underquilt, just had a mid grade 40 degree bag I was in...except for the compression issue, I was fine! It got into the low 30s I think. I would up sleeping in a shelter and was was JUST warm enough to sleep, I did not have a pad.

I'm leaving at about the same time and I'm debating if my 30deg. Western Mountaineering bag will be enough. I have been warm in it with clothes down to about the mid twenties. Of course WM is one of the best sleeping bag companies on the planet.

I'll have a 20 deg Incubator under me until it's steady at least in the 50s at night, then I'll be switching to an IX UQ. Of course I'm hoping that this winter's warm temperature trends (Feb. 50s upstate NY) continue into the Spring. I definitely wouldn't consider leaving Springer at that time of year with anything less. Too many past reports of temps in the teens and April snow storms. Of course, no One knows your sleeping requirements better than you.

Good luck with your hike...perhaps we'll see you on the trail.

Never trust the N GA mountains. We're known to get snow in March and April.

I tried to skimp on my sleeping bag on a one-nighter to Blood Mountain once. It was cold, and the wind whipped right through the windows of the old shelter on top. Coldest night of my life! I would go with at least a 30 degree bag. You might be able to get by with a 40 degree bag and liner, but check the weather a couple days before!

Even in July it drops down to some chilly temps. Yes you'll need it.
