What is the opinion on pushing this back to April 28-29?
Reasons being it will give us that much more time to get sorted out, the weather should be a bit better that time, and we may want to add a kayak aspect to this in order to see more of the park faster and be more conducive to camping with hammocks (the established sites are designed for tents for the most part).
What say ye? Will this help get us a better (in terms of number) crowd?
My 8 year old son and I would be interested in coming from Louisville. We have camped in the flood plain out of a small john boat in the past. Be careful with your cell phone in the park...I got nailed with big roaming charges. The Green river floodplain is lightly used in the park. Everyone goes to the cavern. You must have your car properly tagged and parked to avoid the wrath of the National Park Service.
Would like to get on the water, so April is fine with me. What about making it a "Car camping" weekend to bring out some of the less adventurous?
Should be plenty of trees, unless the Rangers are fussy about hangers. Having never camped there I dont know what their feelings are about that.
Hope things can be sorted out and we can get a hang going in Kentucky!
2 trees, 2 straps, 2 minutes.., 2 comfy 2 care
I like the car camping idea as well. I have never camped at any of the three campgrounds.
I can tell you that the campground at Houchins is pretty small but would be a good base of operations to either hike (from the Temple Hill trailhead) or to do kayaks canoes. $12 per night. Twelve sites first come first serve.
The campground up near the actual cave appears to be quite large and pretty well used. I am not sure how they would feel about hammocks in the trees. $17 per site per night max 8 people per site. Reservations taken.
The third is the Maple Springs campground. It is the more remote/rustic campground near the Maple Springs trail head. From that trailhead there are some good hiking loop options. $30 per site per night. Three group sites max of 24 people per site. Reservations required.
28th & 29th work better for me.
Not crazy about the car camping but I understand. I wonder about being able to hang in the campgrounds there. I know from being there at that time that the campgrounds fill up fast.
I camped at Houchins Ferry once and said I wouldn't ever again. Redneck Fest, was not conducive to familys.
I think Maple Springs would be a good fit for us. I have personally never seen anyone using it. That could be a good thing and a bad thing. Good would be no rabble rousers. Bad might be that it is growed up.
I can call and see what the park says about maintenance and hanging.
Maple springs is the group campground, right? I think alot of horse people use it.
I've been wanting to get my son to the Mammoth Caves, so I'll be keeping my eye on this one to see if we can make it. He has open knee surgery March 26, so he'll be laid up a while. I'll just have see how he is doing and when you guys decide to go, so I've subscribed to this thread so I can keep track of. It would be great to plan a trip to the caves the same time a group hang is going on.
Yes, it is the group campground. Two sites are for the "horse people."
DivaB, the caves are a neat thing to see. I especially liked going down into the caves in the hottest part of the summer to escape the heat.
Above ground there are some beautiful things to see as well. Springs, old homesites, the Green and Nolin rivers, and rugged hills covered in wild flowers in spring.
