    Amicalola State Park Question

I'm doing the Georgia section in a few weeks starting at Amicalola. It is about a 6 hour drive for me. Thinking of driving down the night before we start and staying at the park. Anyone ever stayed there before? Is the campground Hammock friendly? I will be arriving late and will need to coordinate with a shuttle in the morning but I thought I could get an earlier start this way. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm remembering right, There is a shelter there. You've got to walk a bit to get to it though. You could just stay in your vehical. There's a park of sorts there, or at least I remember a bunch of peope having picnics all over the place. I did take a shower there, so I do remember that you can do that!!

    Amnicola State Park

F.S. rd 42 crosses the trail a mile from the Springer Mtn. shelter and Stover Creek Shelter. Sherpa Guides has good directions, good place to park there too. The stover creek shelter is really cool!! Great place to hang.

There is (or at least was...) a shelter right at the base of the approach trail. I stayed there a few years ago (maybe a bit more than a few...) but I don't recall it being a long distance from the parking area, maybe a 5 minute walk? That should be a very good option for you.

I always wanted to go there when I lived in Ga. Just never made it, there was just always somewhere else to go that day.

Campground is pretty standard, a cleared site, gravel pad. Probably can find a place to hang, but might have to pick the spot first, or tell them what you're looking for if you make a reservation.

The campground is around the area at the top of the falls. The shelter is on the trail behind the visitor center that goes through the archway. As I recall, there were plenty of trees around to hang in the vicinity.

When I go back I'm definitely skipping the approach trail. I'd recommend driving up the forest service road and camping on the trail. Leave your vehicle in the parking lot on the service road.
There's camping in the park, not sure about hammock friendliness.

you can actually hang in the actual campground( i've done it) there is a shelter right behind the visitor center. long term parking is to the left of the visitor center.

    watch out for the stairs...

It is def hang friendly. Oh and a small word of advice. When you start out behind the visitors center, if you go straight, and not to the left like the rangers tell you can hike to the top of the falls and avoid the 600+ stairs. I wish I had known that my first time out.
