Hey guys, I got a bunch of ripstop that is about 74" wide and I'm making my first hammock (stretch-side)...should I cut it down to about 60-64" or leave it 74"wide. I'm a big dude, but I want it to work well.
Thanks in advance for you help!

I'd leave it for now. It'll end up a little narrower after sewing. Worst case you could always make it smaller later. The width is good for laying diagonally.

I think wider the better. You'll get a nice flat lay.

It will affect it in the sens that as Dblcorona said you'll get a good flat lay. If you are on the shorter side you may find the edges flop a little when in it. If you are taller then you probably won't. From what I have read, a longer hammock will be more comfortable and there will be less chance of calf ridge pressure that gathered end hammocks are prone to have. If you have the material, consider making it on the longer side say 11 feet or so. You could go longer but 11 feet is a good length if you still want reasonable tarp coverage.

Sounds good guys...flatter = better for me! I am 6'4" so I think 11 feet long at my width would be good.
Thanks again!
You can always whip the ends and try it out before you do any sewing.
Find the thread(s) on Knotty's cinch-cord / stretch-side for parts of the hems to gather up extra fabric, making a footbox, or just neatening up the hammock.
A similar approach is now a feature of some (all?) Wilderness Logics hammocks.
But.....the bigger the hammock..........the bigger the rain fly / tarp ought to be...... unless you have a plan for hoods for the rain-collecting hammock ends.
