Video:Roan High Knob 2nd Annual Higher Colder Hang

Woohoo, turned 53 on RHK amid brutal but beautiful conditions. Originally planned as a 2 night event we lost our intended shuttles and ended up doing a simple overnighter to RHK. Attendees were Wisenber, Ice, Damjamman, Poof and Medicine.
No patch was given out for this event but I'm sure all will remember the winds and the cold.
I've been to RHK too many times to count and it never gets old with the wonder of the northern boreal forest that the mountain isles can provide in the south.
Poof used the Western Mountaineering Ponderosa as pod to great success and when discoverd in the morning had it unzipped even at 14.2F
I used a combo of the incredible MacIX Hammock Sock, a Leighlo 5-50 (the current cutting edge in underquilts-thanks Hangnout!), a Speer Snugfit and a Warbonnet winter Mamba.
A new burner was used, the Evernew Ti Alcohol Stove-sloooooooow but very efficicient--it needs a Clikstand!
Paul's (AHE) super sock were used for the first time in the woods in conjunction with a pair of Neos overboots and these are the bomb for warmth and convenience in cold wear.
My favorite piece of kit was the MacIX Hammock Sock. Mac showed me last year that in these conditions a tarp is not needed. After waking up and seeing the conditions of the tarps used I looked a the sleek aerodynamic hammock sock and new that this is the way to go! I checked temps inside and outside and throughout the hang it was at minimum 10F warmer inside-and NO lines tangled, stakes bent, or the noise of tarp flutter.
Mac should go into hammock history for perfecting this piece of gear.
Great meeting Ice and Damjammon even if briefly in these trying conditions.
So who wants to do it next year? Only the brave or the fool hearty!

A Big Happy Birthday to you MedicineMan.
And thanks for the shout outs.
And some have a standard coffee sipping scene in their videos or some thing else that they show in every video. In your case it is lovely Poof disoriented answering to the “where are we.” I simply love that scene. You are a lucky man MedicineMan.
    Great video as usual.
    Best of wishes,
    BlazeAway.

Some un-Godley mountain! HA! She's right!

Looks like you were all warm as long as you were in your rigs. Love the Mac IX Hammock Sock, it's saved my butt a couple of times.

Great video per usual Medicineman. It was also great to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones.
It's hard to believe that the temperature dropped five degrees just on the 1.5 mile hike back down to Carver's Gap. I wish that my fingers were warm enough to have taken some video when we got back to the parking lot. The wind was blowing hard enough to scoot me along the slick spots without moving my feet. The other side of the gap looked to be near whiteout on the exposed ridge.

That Zippo hand warmer of mine was STILL burning when I got home in Knoxville around 5! I lit it at around 2 the morning before. I'll have to see about incorporating it into my cold weather kit a bit better next trip. When placed in a bag with food and water, it will keep your water from freezing and your Snickers from chipping a tooth. It also appears that it burns longer with white gas than with Zippo fluid.

One thing that the video did not capture was the how quick and stealthy shelter mice can be. Ice left his gorp out for only a few minutes only to notice that one had already chewed through the bag. My pack was outside on the table fora few minutes before I noticed one crawling through one of the outside pockets. (For all I know I have five of them in my pack right now.)

MacEntyre, we missed you and Thing1. Hopefully you'll at least get to enjoy a spike in sales of your IX Sock after the resounding plug you got on your product. After seeing what my taught pitch became after a night of 50 mph wind gusts, I too can attest to the superiority of a sock to a tarp in those conditions.

RF, I KNOW what you mean.
