Here's a self inflator that's 30" wide for a good price. They had one that was about 24" wide for half the price but I couldn't find it. Neo has one...maybe he'll chime in. I have an older 2" thick thermarest that I use and like very much. I leave the valve open and really don't have any problems with the dreaded "shoulder squeeze". I find that blowing it up makes it too stiff. I have a double bottomed hammock which keeps it in place. I don't even feel it....very comfy.

    WalMart 24 inch Blue Pad

I have one of these. I bought it in an effort to escape making pad extenders.

It is a good pad if you can sleep in one position. But, once you get settled, it is like you are velcroed in place. I'm a light sleeper who tosses around for the second half of the night. This pad didn't work for me because I couldn't move.

I also have a thermorest 20 inch wide. With the pad extenders, I can sleep warm and move around when I wake up stiff.

All pads kind of "fight" getting diagonal in my humble short experience opinion. I begin to see the allure of the underquilt.
Jeff, How did the double wall hammock with a pad inserted work??
Not perfect,I guess, since you moved to an underquilt.

Or, how about directions to a writeup for converting a sleeping bag to an underquilt?? I have old sleeping bags.

Egg crate refers to the shape of the pad...convoluted, or bumpy. Egg crate pads can be made from CCF or OCF. The normal blue CCF pad is also 24" wide and convoluted, but there's also a pad with 1/8" regular CCF on bottom and 3/8" (I think) OCF egg crate on top.

Either way, I think Sgt Rock made a good point about egg crate pads a while back. They're only insulating to the thinnest point in the pad...which is about 1/8" on a 1/2" thick convoluted pad. That's extra bulk you're carrying. It may make ground sleeping more comfortable, but it's just extra weight in the hammock.

That goes for CCF - OCF compresses so I'm not sure it's really an issue there.

Teblum - The two-layer hammock kept the pad in place very well. You have to get out of the hammock to situate it at first, but then it doesn't move. I changed to an underquilt b/c of the condensation issues.

CM - I think the zippered SPE will work well once I get spandex for the bottom - using the elastic like I did allows the fabric to pull away from the pad and I get drafts. That's only an issue when the bag is zipped to the SPE, though - with a normal SPE it doesn't make any difference.

I'm not convinced on that one. The egg crate, used on the ground, creates air pockets under the bumps, too. So theoretically, if you had a good vapor barrier under your hammock, it should work the same way....
