I am getting ready to order a JRB Hudson River long TQ, and trying to decide whether to have them sew the footbox or not. Is there any reason not to?

Both my homemade top quilts, my summer and my winter one are not sewn. I'm finding that I like my summer one that way. But I'm gonna have to sew up the winter one. During the night, as I move about, I'll get cold spots around my feet. It's from the quilt not being sewn together and a toe managing to stick out of the quilt. I do have a channel at the end of this winter quilt with shockcord in it but it still dosn't close tight enough that my toes don't manage to find that hole during the night!!

Obviously I didn't request a sewn foot box because it is useful to have that wearable option. But I too have noticed that my feet seem to get a bit colder than when I use my sleeping bag as a TQ. I've been able to combat this with a small reflectix sitpad (underfeet inside footbox) & heavy wool socks. That has worked thus far. I'm expecting to need down booties eventually, just because of this issue.
As for a non-wearable TQ the only reasonable excuse for a non-sewn foot box (in my mind) might be to vent the quilt in warmer weather. Otherwise I can't think of a good reason.

For my 20* and 0* TQ's I have the footbox sewn and for my summer TQ I have it draw cord closure!
If you already have the drawcord closure all you need to do is stuff a sock in the opening and cinch it up which will close off any gap, or, stuff in a shirt or jacket into the end of your TQ!

I sent an email to the Jacks with the same question, and they noted that if it's not sewn, in winter I can use the Hudson River as an UQ in addition to my torso length Greylock UQ. I think that in combination with my 0 degree sleeping bag or a winter TQ would keep me toasty.
That, in addition to being able to vent the footbox in warmer weather, sold me on not having the footbox sewn, although there is a 0.6oz penalty for the omni tape and the cinch cord.
Hope I made the best choice!
