    Poncho Tarp

It's a poncho, tarp and endcap.

I wanted a mini tarp to see what the buzz was about smaller tarps. Realized it can be a multi-purpose. Added the hood with a drawstring closure. Added shockcord and cordlocks for cinching the poncho and tying it to my waist, making the length somewhat adjustable. Added some grosgrain webbing at the corners.
Big enough for use with a pack on, the shockcord lets me adjust accordingly.
Covers the hammock (just barely) for a lightweight solution in light rain conditions.

Strung up as a diamond tarp over the hammock. 9'6", so it is minimal coverage with the hammock (I dont have a ridgeline on this hammock, which it needs. I've explained my home trees are wide spread before, so it will work, I just need to tweak the hammock)

Added as an option to the Ogee tarp, the poncho works really well to give a wind block to one end.

I have a carabiner on a sliding prussik, which worked well with the poncho attachment, poncho is staked down on two corners and a pack could be added on top of the poncho to keep it from blowing around. It was slightly breezy during the set up and did fine as is, but a pack would help in windier conditions.

One of the Ogee doors pulled down over the poncho. Good seal.

I know its not a new idea, many folks have done it before. But it works with the Ogee and it can be a stand alone tarp, if need be. Even a gear tarp. And I have a poncho to wear.

    Thanks all.

64 wide 1.1 sil @ 8'-6" long, hem the edges, allowing for shockcord channels at the short sides. Fold into 1/4 to layout hood opening. (this will give you center and let you cut the hole a little quicker, unless you want to layout a full circle..) Measured from center 3 3/4" and marked out my semicircle and cut all four layers at one time with it still folded. Open it up and its a smooth round circle, dead center.
You could also do a slit and avoid the circle. Which IMO will be the step I take next time. And then hem and reinforce the slit. And modify the hood to match. The circle wants to open under tension as a tarp. If the slit is laid out right it will pull tight and basically self close. The hood does a decent job of sealing up as is, but theres a bit of tension, hence the wrinkles...

Anyways...for the hood I used a hooded sweatshirt as a pattern, added a few inches for the seam allowance and drawcord channel in the hood. Stitched the hood to the poncho..(have fun with that)

Finished weight for tarponcho ala gargoyle . 8.3 oz. including four cordlocks, shockcords, grosgrain. I'm 6' 5", and the poncho hangs down to me knees or just below. The shockcord can be cinched up and allow the poncho to be worn shorter, basically tie the shockcord around my waist (if I had one).

Being sil it will be a sweat box, but it will be waterproof. Hopefully with the gaps in the sides it will breath enough?

PS It all rolls up and stores in the hood, very compact.

    Sweaty fetal Gargoyle.

    Thanks!

Fantastic! Thanks for the info and specs. You da man! I've been thinking about such a project since I saw MLD's poncho/tarp. Double-use gear = lighter pack. I'll have to try your design out on some old fabric until I figure out the details for my kit. Wonder what kind of weight it would be in Cuben. . .

    forgot to mention..

The ponchos dimensions will also work good as an undercover for the hammock. The shockcord will allow for a good fit and the grosgrain loops for suspending it. The shockcord may be long enough to use as suspension, I'll have to play with that.

Condensation may be an issue? but if its cold enough and windy enough and rainy enough..I'll live with some condensation. Should be a bit of a vapor barrier tho with the quilt in between. And vapor rises..

If y'all ask nice I'll model the poncho.

    Give us twirl Garg!

I've been sewing one today, too. I used green coated polyester ripstop, its about 12 oz finished, but should be a little bit breathable.

Good idea, I don't allow rain on my backpacking trips but can see where this would be useful!
