I have a stock explorer with a hex fly and was wondering what the single best thing I can do to lighten up my load.

Change the suspension to Whoopies.

+1 Agreed with this! You can also choose to go with thinner/lighter tree straps when you make this change.
Now me personally...I love the HH hex tarp. But, for some it's a heavy critter. So your next possible solution would be to go with a lighter and/or smaller tarp. Something done from silnylon or even cuben if you can afford them.
But cheapest/easiest first step would be to modify your suspension system.
Hmmm....sell it and get an explorer UL??
Ditto to what others are saying. For your lightest option, use the smallest hammock rated to your size/weight/preferences, as well as the lightest fly. I lean towards a Hyperlight for myself with a 20 denier silnylon fly. Next choice has been the Asym Backpacker with the fly borrowed from the Hyperlight. Switching the suspension to Whoopies will shave a bit more weight, but void the warranty, so I'd wait at least a year to do that.

has anybody weighed the rope? I'm curious about how much weight would really be saved moving to whoopies.
Like others have said. I'd swap out the ropes for whoopies and the replace the tarp.
Trade her in on a hyperlight
Trade in the tarp for silnylon or oh even lighter..... duh duh duuun...... CUBIN
