USGI Gore-Tex Bivy Sack as a Sock

Has anyone tried using the surplus USGI sleep system Gore-Tex Bivy sack as a sock? Its over 80 inches long and appears to be made of very durable fabric. I think my seamstress could work wonders with it as a sock?

I'll bet it would make a great sock.
Maybe a little on the heavy side if you;re backpacking.
I hope you post up some picts if you tackle this project it sounds neat.

It's extremely light... But unless you really expand the width, I would think it to be a very tight fit.

My friend just puts the Gore-Tex bivy in his hammock, sleeping bag inside of that.

I tried it before buying a winter sock from papa smurf. cons: heavy, bad condensation(unless you leave a good size opening), width is a little confining. but it does work

It weighs 2 lbs 1 oz. I have 3 new ones, well they were new each has about 3 trips on them. We didn't carry tents and were above the tree line. For us they were perfect and even after getting a hammock and tarp will hold on to one or two. They are bullet proof. For the money they are better than anything in there class for less than a couple hundred.

    Thanks,

Hey. It is Gore-tex, and equisitely taped and sewn at all seams, on an industrial basis. It is no wonder they are so expensive new on the surplus market.

And, the specs are for those of a bivy: Waterproof. So, whatever the weight, the GI carrying it offsets some of that weight against the weight of a tarp. If I were in the need and market for a canvas sock, I'd certainly try one of these in used condition first.

If mine were not in perfect condition, I'd have punctured it.
