Come to the Dark (DIY) Side! We have cookies.

Another vote for DIY. I used the directions from DIY gear supply DL hammock(easily modified for a longer hammock). IIRC ~ $40 including ripstop and material for whoopies. Very comparable in comfort (if not more so) than my WBBB. Very easy DIY project! Took about 4 hours from start to finish.

(Of course thats assuming you have access to a sewing machine - you could do it by hand, it would just take a bit longer).
Experience is the worst teacher - it presents the exam first and the lesson later. - Unknown

    I would go with DIY.

For a inexpensive pre-made double, there is also the Claytor No-net. Even with the attached net versions, you can use them "upside down" for the peapod.

Papasmurfs dream hammock is supposed to be coming out soon too. It sounds like it's supposed to be big and you can get it in a double in whatever colors you want.

+2 on the night owl. You get whoopies, tree straps, and adjustable stretch sides.

Or you can DIY the same thing for less, but add the time in making it and you only save a little.

That thing supports 500+ lbs. I'm wondering if it's a hammock specifically designed for water buffaloes!

    You might look at the Bias Hammock from buttinasling.com. $37.95, 58 x 126, 11.5 oz ripstop 1.9.

++++ on the Wilderness Logics Night Owl (or Light Owl if you are counting ozs). It is an extremely well made product and the folks at WL are really great to work with. Like others have said, it is a bit over your budget but includes tree huggers and whoopies.

You simply cannot go wrong with a WL hammock!

I am also thinking about the DIY double layer. What type of seam are you using?
