JRB Baffle Question

I am fairly new to the forums here so if this question has been asked and answered already, just point me in the direction that I need to go. I am looking into 3 season underquilts and have found that the majority of manufacturers run the baffles the length of the quilt. JRB underquilts have the baffles running the width of the quilt. I have read that running the baffles width wise could cause the down to settle and cause cool spots at the edges. Does JRB make the baffles in such a way that this is not a concern? I have a summer weight JRB topquilt that I like very much, but have no experience with their underquilts. Any information would be appreciated.

I have several JRB quilts and I have never seen this problem. It seems to be a matter of the amount of fill and the correct baffle height. They seem to have it down pat.

On their website JRB has an article "Nesting Tricks from an Old Coot". It will give you some insight on your question. I have a nest UQ and have used into the upper 20's on a HH and it kept me warm.

the ONLY time I have had cold spots was when we were camping in heavy winds and it was cold(30's) but it was due to user error when hanging the UQ. I've used their UQ's for about three years now and have never experienced cold spots that were not the fault of the user.

Which is, I think, a sure signal to revise one's theoretical understanding of how hi-fill-power down actually works in an under-quilt.

One thing the Jacks could not argue with: No amount of shaking, with radial baffles, is going to enable the user to shift the down and insulating down toward her feet or head. As with rails on which a full-length UQ can slide, that could make one consider, again, whether the theoretical is more important than what happens in ordinary practice.

From my own limited experience, the only place I might want to shift insulation from, as less important, could be to the sides of the waist- hip area. Why? I'm either laying straight or diagonal.Both ways I'm occupying the center of the hammock. Neither way will the waist-through-thigh portion of my body be high on the hammock wall, as the shoulder or head might be when diagonal.

So, what is a quilt maker to do, save an ounce with hour-glass shaped construction and down distribution?
