    DIY underquilt question

I'm just curious and maybe someone out here has an idea, and possibly an answer. As I embark on this underquilt construction journey, I'm getting ready to cut out material for baffles and it occurred to me. Why not just make tubes of the bugnet, seal them, and sandwich them between two pieces of nylon? Sew the ends of the tubes into the outside hems and tah dah underquilt. Have I not thought something through?

The problem that you will likely run into is the tubes shifting and pulling apart from each other in some areas and bunching up in others....a gap of a 1/2 inch between the tubes will make a cold spot that would be enough to be at very least annoying, at worst keep you cold all night so you don't sleep well. The normal baffling method prevents any cold spots and an even layer of down distribution so you don't get cold spots. More work but worth it to stay warm and sleep the night tough without waking.

that's a pretty good idea and unique but i think most would shy away from that due to the addition of weight. i also foresee some piling going on there between baffles if there isn't anything holding the inner and outer shell in place.

it would be a cool concept if you had 1 shell and all you did was unzip a side and slide in and out different tubes as you describe for seasons but i would think it would almost need to be a sewn through shell which wouldn't work in the winter. but if you maybe had velcro on the inside or safety pinned or something.

i look forward to seeing where you take this.

On way that would make it work a bit better would be if you designed the baffles so they would lay together in a shingle baffle style. Put a little more slant in these and you'll get the idea ///// They need to overlap and be more of a oval shape rather than round. The trick would be to get some allowance for your differential so that they do not separate when you lay in the hammock....basically that is going to mean more overlap and like bloogorge said that takes the weight up....Not sure if your going to get a big benefit of it being simpler or easier to actually make it work over following a basic example like the Red River UQ tutorial.

yeah, that's what I'm thinking now. The tubes would be too loose in the middle and thus wiggle room. Eh, it was just a thought. I appreciate the responses.

I actually tried that on one of my underquilts. I used I think it is called twill a lot lighter than noseem. I attached to both ends while sewing on the grosgrain. The problem was not the shifting but the cold spots in between each tube. Underquilt works great now that they were removed. Got it down to 14 so far. Good luck
