Up past Brevard, there is the Fish Hatchery. You can take the trail and camp up in the pines across the creek. About a mile in.

The Appalachian Trail is just a short drive up to Mars Hill.

Pisgah Natl Forest is the closest place I can think of (same as the 2 fine gents above me mentioned...). But I will throw out another area... the service road just north of the ranger's station (also the same road that has the horse stables) has about 12+ car camping sites that are free. My personal favorite is site #4 but any should meet your expectations. There are also several other areas in Pisgah that have free campsites. Might be best to stop in the ranger's station and talk with them.

South mills river trail off the 191 toward Brevard is really nice. About 1/2 mile in right on river. Turn off at turkey pen gap road. Good luck and have fun.

If you head west on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just past Graveyeard Fields is a turn off to Black Balsam. The road starts off paved (but full of pot holes), but quickly degrades into a dirt road. Take it about a mile or so until it dead ends in a parking lot. There are dozens of trails stemming from that parking lot and free camping along most of them. Heading off to your left and downhill will take you to a river. Pretty sure you can hike to Shinning Rock or Graveyard Fields from there.
"The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

The whoopies are great. The soft shackles are pretty nifty too.

Thanks for all the info. What's weather like there. We are traveling the east coast from Michigan to new york then south along the ocean. The pack my lady bought is getting shipped to the rei in ashevile. Our goal is Florida then us 10 along Mexico and come up through Dallas through arizona and then Colorado to grand junction. But that is just a idea. So camping or finding friendly people to stay with makes much more adventure.

Well, if you make it on down into the Gainesville, FL area (not likely as it sounds like you're going to be on the coast, but, hey...) feel free to PM me.

That might happen. We may drive through it on our way to the gulf. I've heard Gainesville is pretty cool.
