Solution to the Mummy Bag in the Hammock?

    Well, for me, anyway.

My favorite piece of gear, until my hammock came along and swept me off my feet, was my Swiss Army surplus fleece mummy bag liner. Its not too bulky, not overly heavy, and perfect for the kind of weather we get here in Texas in the Spring and Fall-----and a good part of the Winter too. Comfy to sleep on, soft to the touch, cozy warm most of the time, and cheap, cheap, cheap.

But I despaired mightily---wept like a baby really----when I found it was difficult to use in my hammock. There are going to be times, and soon, when the weather will be warm enough that a top quilt is too much, but something is needed to keep the chill off, and this thing (with a bivy) has always done that job admirably. Last night something came to me, and it fit right in with my DIY skill level.

The bag has a draw string at the top. I tied that through a prusik loop on the ridge line, and there you go, bigger'n Texas, a reverse under quilt.

Now at least I know where the top is. I grab the side of the bag along with the hammock as I get in and can swing my legs up to get into the foot box. Still a little bit of wriggling to get it right at the top, but I think that's just gonna take some tweaking.

Now I can still carry my woobie and my blankie camping without needing a pad and a bivy, just the hammock and tarp.

    Ain't life grand?

Glad that worked out for you. Sure beats having it just float around free underneath you in the hammock. Doing that, it usually just ends up all balled up somewhere and not where you need it.

Tried it out last night and it worked like a charm. Temp last night was 57* and I slept in my underwear with just the liner and a PLUQ.

    Found my Spring Rig.

There's still a bit of a problem with the "high" end slipping down some. I'm going to replace the cord that's in there now with some shock cord. I think that will tend to pull it back up when I lift my shoulders up off the hammock once I'm inside.

Very nice. I have an idea that some of the cooling we want to avoid is from movement of moisture from the skin to the hammock acting as a large evaporative pad, very efficiently finding ambient heat across the outside and delivering CBS and CSS. So that intermediate fleece liner / layer might be all that is needed for 10-15 F.

Maybe just a pair of buttons on each side of the hammock and some shock cord or lined up button holes sewed to the sides of the liner to stabilize it in that direction?

I've been using my inflatable pillow to keep spacing at the top. It wedges in very well and actually stays in place.

Or maybe some of Dutch's quilt hooks to hook the shock cord around...
