Well, for me, anyway.
My favorite piece of gear, until my hammock came along and swept me off my feet, was my Swiss Army surplus fleece mummy bag liner. Its not too bulky, not overly heavy, and perfect for the kind of weather we get here in Texas in the Spring and Fall-----and a good part of the Winter too. Comfy to sleep on, soft to the touch, cozy warm most of the time, and cheap, cheap, cheap.
But I despaired mightily---wept like a baby really----when I found it was difficult to use in my hammock. There are going to be times, and soon, when the weather will be warm enough that a top quilt is too much, but something is needed to keep the chill off, and this thing (with a bivy) has always done that job admirably. Last night something came to me, and it fit right in with my DIY skill level.
The bag has a draw string at the top. I tied that through a prusik loop on the ridge line, and there you go, bigger'n Texas, a reverse under quilt.
Now at least I know where the top is. I grab the side of the bag along with the hammock as I get in and can swing my legs up to get into the foot box. Still a little bit of wriggling to get it right at the top, but I think that's just gonna take some tweaking.
Now I can still carry my woobie and my blankie camping without needing a pad and a bivy, just the hammock and tarp.
Ain't life grand?
