How tall is your son? I usually add user's height + 1.5 feet on each end and then 6 inches for whipping and hems. If your son is 4 feet tall, I would make the hammock 7' 6" long. I usually just hem the sides and leave the width "as is". I usually have 48 or 60" width fabric so no need to adjust the width.
As I'm a noob at this, I don't know if me chiming in helps, but I just made one for my 6yo daughter... I didn't measure anything and just bought 2 yards (quick hems and gathered end), and it's a bit short (but usable). I tend to think that they're young enough to A) not really know/care how to lay in it correctly, and B) their backs aren't messed up yet, so it doesn't really matter
I made my two children hammocks about two weeks ago. I used the normal 120" x 60" ripstop nylon and whipped one end close to the end of the fabric. At the other end I whipped it further down to shorten the lengeth. This allows us to unwhip and rewhip the fabric as the children grow.
Progress is man's ability to complicate simplicity.
