    Random Fabric weight ratings?

I tried (minimally, I'll admit) to search for an answer to this, to no avail.

How can you tell whether a certain fabric will hold a given weight (without building the hammock and plopping the person(s) in it?

Cordage is easy, but I have no clue on fabric, especially when it's from a discount fabric store where all the bolts are thrown together and nothing is marked.

That's a very hard question to answer. The short answer is that the rating is tied to the thread density (and therefore the fabric weight), but the actual correlation is rather loose.
IOW, heavier fabrics can hold more weight, but how much more is up for debate.
The weave of the fabric (taffeta, ripstop, knit, etc.) plays a part in how strong it is too, so that's another factor.

I'd say your best bet is to throw a hammock together and see if it works, and if it does, great. If it doesn't, well, now you know.

    Funny. I just posted this:

Somewhere, and maybe pucker has the link again... there's a "burn" test you can do to determine the fabric makeup.

Even lightweight polyester and nylon is far stronger than you'd think...

Don't trust cotton! Or Rayon... Polyester and nylon are proven materials...

I'm thinking spandex might be a bad idea, too...

There's a chart here that helps.

You can always ask if somebody can guess the material...
