8.5 oz. for a complete insulation system??!

I have just learned about these new emergency reflective bivy sacks that are BREATHABLE. This one: SOL Escape comes with a one-third length side-zipper. The video says it's more durable than their 3 ounce emergency blankets. Does anyone have any experience using a breathable emergency blanket in a hammock as their primary insulating system?

To be honest, at $50, I'm just arm-chair quarterbacking. I would probably never pull the trigger on such an unconventional idea. Although the potential weight saving is very tempting! Thoughts?

I usually carry one of those bivys with me for emergencies.

Although they may reflect radiant heat, they are practically useless for preventing heat loss through conduction.

I assume you're talking about summer use? If that's the case, on 60+ degree nights I use a thin fleece top quilt that weighs 10oz and my 40" gossamer gear 1/8" pad that weighs 2oz or just under.

No experience with breathable emergency blankets here, but a layer of InsulFleece added to my PLUQ took me from a comfort zone of about 40 F to a comfort zone of about 25 F. I don't know if that's due to the polyester fill (my gut says yes, but I agree with High Fidelity's protagonist that my gut has **** for brains most of the time) or the mylar's reflective properties, but it helped.

I should know this but I guess I have to ask. Does the layer of Insulfleece go between the hammock and the poncho liner, or is it attached under the poncho liner? I can not figure out where the mylar should be.

I could go and do this this weekend.

This looks similar to a British product used by SAS and spec forces, as well as disaster services. Those run about $55 and are good down to 15-20 degrees. I mentioned them on www.paddling.net about 6 months ago. I'll send the link to you as soon as I can find it. They were compable to an space blanket made of reflectix but I thought they were also breathable.
