    Question DIY or purchased Quilts

Right now, my Bro and I are looking into both under and over quilts. Given that we have an excellent seamstress avail for the summer; we are leaning toward the DIY types.

I have found one DIY over quilt plan using synthetic insulation...but none using down. I have not found any under quilt DIY plans.

Can anyone point me to some pretty comprehensive plans and/or kits to make either and/or both of these?

Lastly, I was looking at the Ray Jardine style top quilt and the kickass bottom quilts; however I can not find prices for either of these or any info if they are avail as a kit.

    All responses welcome!

    Hey WalksInDark,
Here is a terrific plan to start from:

If you look in the articles section you should find instructions for top and under quilts, both down and synthetic, under "Do it yourself Gear".

Also check JustJeff's website http://www.tothewoods.net/. I think he may have some instruction on there.

    Mike's Down Top Quilt Instructions

Both are down-filled quilts and both look like excellent projects.

The RRG quilt instructions are good - I made a down quilt from them with no trouble.
There are also instructions somewhere for easy synthetic quilts - I made one of those with PrimaLoft and it actually was very easy and worked out well. There are some very "unstraight" seams in a couple of places but somehow it kept me toasty in October in the Adirondacks!

Just remember you're not in a race so go at a comfortable pace... or at least don't bother your seamstress while she's working.

I put together the plans for the RRG down quilt. PM me if you have any questions. It isn't as hard of a project as you might think. Just take your time. Stuffing the baffles wasn't as hard as everyone made it out to be. Just go slow. Definitely watch the length on the top quilt. I made mine just a little too short. It isn't too hard to go back and add more length, just a pain.

Coffee's, nee Hammock Engineer, plans + thru-hiker.com's kit are WONDERFUL!!!

As he said, its not hard, there are a lot of steps, and it takes time, but the payoff is FANTASTIC!!!

On thru-hiker there is also a link to yet another DIY guide, but I liked Coffee's better.

Somewhere on this forum I posted the steps for how I got the down in the chambers. That too isn't "hard", just take your time.
