Does anyone in Ohio use a open hammock with no netting and just a tarp and have trouble with bugs or skeeters? Thinking of getting an open hammock with a good tarp.

I would recommend some type of bug protection in the warmer months.

Before hammock camping, I dabbled in tarp camping. I slept quite a few nights under the stars or with just a tarp over me. A bug headnet made all the difference.

At very least you can use just a headnet in your no net hammock as you're covered with a quilt or sleeping bag; so your body is protected.

Only issue with this is when it's really hot, if you have a hammock with integrated bugnetting, you can lay inside with nothing on you and still be protected from the bugs. With no net you can't do this obviously.

Bottom line - I wouldn't go out in warmer months with at least a headnet if not a full bugnet. YMMV.

Welcome from Columbus! Come on down for a hang sometime. Great group of hangers here.

Thanks this answers my question. Solution is to get one with built in net.

Hello from Springboro.. I'm new also, have most of my gear but haven't done my "first hang" yet.

The "most" part being that I do not yet have my bug net. I think I have decided to go with a Fronkey style bug net for my double layer hammock; there are many different add on bug net solutions if you don't find a hammock with the netting built in that suits you.
