I've watched the videos on making a grizz bridge and some others. My question is about head end vs foot end. is it necessary to make the foot end smaller then the head end? Or is it truly needed to get a flatter lay.

Life looks better from a BIAS hammock.
I'm not an expert, Grizz helped me out big time when I made mine. I think that its about a little weight savings and also now you can buy the longer tent pole that is just the right length for a smaller foot end.
Narrow foot end can save a little weight because of less fabric at the foot end. It can make it a little easier to get it under the tarp because it is narrower.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Nope. Not necessary at all. The head and foot can be symmetric. I believe the JRB BMBH had the same width head and foot. There has been some discussion that having different widths, head and foot, may decrease tippiness, especially in shallower bridges.
