I took my gear to the local retail store to get a pack. My sleeping bag in a 33liter compression sack took up a 3rd of the 85 liter pack. The Guy there put a down bag in a stuff sack and it compressed to half the size of my synthetic bag.
I am wondering, if I go to a top quilt and button quilt, down filled, how much space will it take up?
Also what is the price comparison from a DIY top quilt to a store bought one? Thanks for all the help.
Good question.. Just remember, most of us don't stuff our stuff in stuff sacks before stuffing them in our packs... so you may need less space than you think.
Given a good TQ is smaller than a sleeping bag, if you're going with a 2/3rds down UQ, your overall space will likely be less than your synth bag... having not done a lot of comparisons... I can't help you too much...

A 20* Top quilt and 3/4 underquilt together will probably be about the size of your synthetic bag.
but it is hard to tell.

My 2/3 size down UQ compresses to about 1/3 of my old synth sleeping bag.
The ULA OHM will hold a great deal......Down TQ and UQ.

Awesome answers. Now if I can figure out the cost savings between a DIY TOP quilt and buying one.
If your going to go DIY on your quilts, I would say do the UQ first. It is the easiest of the 2. Once your comfortable making that or realize you don't like making down gear, than you'll know your answer on what to do. Cost savings isn't great when you factor in the time. Some of these guys that are making quilts have pretty amazing quality.
As far as size, here is a post of the size of a Hammock Gear Burrow long in it's stuff sack. The uq will be pretty much the same size if you go full length, or smaller for 3/4.
