    Desoto State Park weekend getaway

This weekend, we finally got good enough weather to get away and enjoy the outdoors. We had two new hangers trying out hammocks for the first time, and I think the enjoyed it enough to at least give it a try again. It was a cold weekend for first timers, but they stayed warm enough the first night to give it a second night without getting the tent out. First night, got down to 29*, second night was 33*.

The wind was terrible when we got to the campground, so we started looking for the best spot to setup. The campsite we choose had a ledge that dropped about 30 feet or so, seen behind the chairs here...beautiful view by the way.

Down below this ledge was the perfect spot to setup out of the wind, and it made a big difference in the first nights sleep. Below is a pic from the ledge looking down at the setup.

Saturday we drove over into the Little River Canyon and found the two backcountry campsites down on the river...we will be trying these sites out on our next trip. Beautiful sites for camping, that is for sure.

It was a very relaxing weekend, good food, good fellowship, and a nice break for all of us.

Glad you were able to get away and take some folks with you. Great shots. Did that spot below the ledge give you the wind break you were hoping for?

Nice pics. I've always wanted to check that place out. Do you have to have some kind of special permit to camp somewhere other than in the campground?

Yes it did break the wind. There were some kayakers that came in late and setup in the site next to us in tents, and they stayed up top on the ledge. They said there was a constant breeze all night, we definitely had the better spot "downstairs".

Where were the backcountry sites? By the main falls at the bridge? I didn't think you could camp in Little River Canyon.

I marked them on my GPS, and one of the guys had a map. You can actually drive to them, but 4 wheel drive is recommended. I will see if I can find the map, we drove down from the state park, and they were easy to find.
