    Dog's first hang

I have a 1 year old, 40Lb. beagle mix that I take camping with me. I did not want his first hammock experience be out of necessity. Last night the low were in the 60s, so we gave it a try.

Patton is skittish of new things so I knew this was going to be a process. I set up the WB Traveler under my house laid down and got settled. Like usual he would come up an prop up on the hammock but would not jump in . I reached down and picked him up. His first hang lasted .4 milliseconds, before he jumped out like a gazelle being chased. I got him back into the hammock, and had to reassure him every thing was OK for about 30 min. He finally laid down fell asleep about 10 min later. We both sleep comfortably until 3am when the heavy fog/ light rain started blowing on us.

Although i did not wake to the sunrise I still call this a success.

Awesome! I put my dog in my hammock and she instantly peed! I'll not be doing that again. Glad to hear you have success.

It takes a lot of practice to get it right and not all dogs want to do it. But, if you can make it work, than it's a blast having your pup there with you.

I'm taking my dog to Afton tonight with a couple friends from HF. She can't get enough of the woods now.

    Have fun with you pup!

My lil Schip loves hanging with or without me! I’ll come home from work to find him asleep in my eno!
On the otherhand… my 2.5y/o Pit tries to get in. She’ll put half her body down to her hind legs in resting on my chest and lay there for long times! I’ve tried to help her in but she just can’t seem to work it out to make it ALL the way in!

its like having a little heating pad in the hammock with you. I can move my little rat terrier around to warm up cold spots. Her favorite spot though is at the bottom of my sleeping bag. If she is missing that is where I find her, i sometimes pull her out lay her beside me but when I wake up I find her at the bottom of my bag. Feet are never cold though. This is normal for her, she has used a little kids sleeping bag as a bed as long as I have had her and she will will get inside of it when she is cold.

Good job! My dog didn't take to the hammock well the first time around so keep at it. He still doesn't like it but when it's cold I make sure he stays with me for both our sakes LOL.

thats awesome I need to try to get my dog into the hammock, never tried it. She usually sleeps on the ground under me but ive only been out when its warm. Shes pretty laid back about me picking her up and putting her upside down etc so I might be able to get her to sleep in there and if we can both get comfortable I think that takes care of my worries about getting cold

mines 60lb though so probably approaching the limit of what I could get comfortable with in my hammock

Have you hear of clicker training? I have used it with my dog since she was a pup and it always works like a charm in new situations. You can also just give them treats or any type of positive reinforcement when they are in the hammock. If you let them think that hopping in the hammock is on their terms then they get the treat. My dog jumped right in, but some dogs might have to start with just approaching the hammock, get a treat. sniff it , treat. touch it, treat. two paws up, treat. jump in, treat. lay down in it, treat. It might take a few sessions, but you'll notice a huge improvement. Plus they think they did it all on their own.
