Recently my well pump went out and my boys and I had to pull the pump from a 120' well with a 1.25" pipe full of water. I'm in pretty good shape for a 44-year-old, but that was... difficult.
That is an important limitation of the capabilities of the clove hitch, but it never comes into play with the pipe hitch. Watch the video carefully -- or better yet, tie the thing yourself -- and you'll see that the tension on the standing part of the line prevents any possibility that the clove hitch will roll. Here's the video again:

Very cool. Reminds me of the distel hitch except for only using the running end to pull.
