Cleveland, OH newly converted hanger with a question...

Headed to the northern 54-mile section of the AT in Virginia on April 1st for a 4-day section hike. With the muy bueno bizzaro weather everyone has been dealt with from mother nature, I'm curious what I might need IF the temps get near the 30's. Just ordered the New River KAQ rated to 30 and was curious if my minimalist marmot 40 bag would suffice as a TQ. I plan on sleeping in thermals, socks, etc, but cannot afford to get a true TQ, yet (this stuff gets expensive!)... Also, should I bring an extra pack cover for an under-weather cover to protect my NR UQ?

Your thoughts/input would be greatly appreciated;-)

PS - using my single ENO with pro fly tarp...

THANKS! This forum is freakin sweet yall.

I've been using a cheap 30* bag as a top quilt with no problems in 20* temps but I am a pretty warm sleeper. Also, I am from kirtland so for the oh hangs I know a couple of us clevelanders carpool sometimes.

yeah, your bottom insulation is the important insulation when it comes to match temps with ratings. If your bottom insulation is rated for the weather you're expecting and top quilt is only 10* off I'd say you'd prolly be fine. For piece of mind though, you should test your gear before you're in a sink-or-swim situation in the mountains

Welcome to you from Southern Maryland. As you say the weather sure has been crazy and very unpredictable. But I think you would probably be all right with the gear that you have. A fleece beanie would also sure you well for sleeping. When it gets closer to you depart date you should have a better feel for what the weather will be and can adjust accordingly.

it depends on if you are a cold or warm sleeper. Having the extra clothes should be fine, worst case scenario if you get to cold, put on your rain gear, it will act as an additional windblock/warmth retainer.

Thx Pappi and PaPaBear;-) I learned last year in Algonquin that even the upper 50s with no UQ = constant shivering.
