I'm looking at purchasing an underquilt as I think it's going to take a lot longer to make one at the moment!
So, while searching for a good price in the UK (Not many suppliers!), I found this:

Now, to the topic, his baffles are perpendicular to the hammock, which I believe will allow the down to fall to the lowest point, leaving the edges unfilled. Surely the baffles should run parallel to the hammock to stop this?
A far as what the conventional wisdom is.....you are correct. But there are those that are making them that way and having success. Jacks R Better sells their UQs with baffles that run perpendicular to the quilt also.

I think I'd also be concerned about the fill power of that down. If it truly weights 412g (14.5oz) I'd assume it's 800-900FP but it would be nice to know that upfront, as well as how much of that 412g is the down itself.

He's made lots of them around the 500 ish mark, I assume he makes it then weighs it...
Might see if he does commissions... Or go back to shopping for sewing machines...
The alarm bells are jingling when no fill power is listed.
I have a homemede pertex UQ with slightly smaller dimensions, 84g/sqm pertex and 800 fill with 2" baffles and it weighs just over300g.
Mat at UKhammocks makes underquilts, as does Unsponsored. They are both members on here and will make you one to order.

If the shell has a proper differential cut, the UQ would only work one way. The correct way would provide full loft and the wrong way would compress the down and provide little insulation.
If the shell is not differential cut, it will be difficult to snug up tight to the hammock without compressing the down in places causing colds spots

Not a fan of it, but might have to cold-call unsponsored and see if it's worth me doing the diy route or not.
My DIY underquilts weren't actually too hard to make. I found ponchos, bivy bags and tarps took much longer.
I'm glad I made mine, but I reckon it was 1.5 days solid work til completion.
If you decide to DIY, you'll not be short of help on here

Have you gone down or synthetic? Would be interested to know if you imported insulation from Germany like most seem to or if you managed to get something in the UK
