Singer Students Manual of Machine Sewing

A great free pdf manual of Singers Students Manual of Machine Sewing at Sew Classic blog. http://blog.sew-classic.com/2009/09/...-free-pdf.aspx

Wish I had had this when I first started. Lots of great info on the basics and of the older classic Singers. There's 6 parts to the manual.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Tnx for the link. I don't have a Singer, but a quick look shows that there is a lot of "general" info in there that should come in handy.

This is an excellent gear makers resource. "Sewing" has come a long way since then, but for gear making it is very useful.

Funny - it was last night I was thinking of PMing Ramblinrev to ask about a book he would recommend to get a really good overview (and helpful tips) on sewing with a machine in general. And then this pops up! Much thanks!

Ramblinrev, do you have any suggestions though?

I don't have much knowledge of sewing books since I was trained on my mom's knee and self taught the rest of the way. My suggestion is to forgo the books, except for this kind of very basic resource and get some lessons from a good sewing center. Explain to them that what you want is very basic sewing instruction. You don't need the high class cutting edge techniques to make gear. The basic seams, hems and construction helps are what you want. They will help you learn by doing and can give you guidance you can't pick up from a book. How to guide the fabric. How to check your stitch balance and correct it. How to "feel" the fabric and process. You can read it, but there's nothing like an expert to pave the foundation. Once you have that, the rest of "sewing" will fall into place except for the real specialized subsets like tailoring and patterning.

Thanks Ramblinrev - the class would be a much better suggestion over a book. Especially having been self-taught and still creating some functional gear - I am looking for more of an improvement on feel.

    Thanks LB
That is a great link. Its funny, I think that I have the machine that is shown in the book. The machine is in a very nice cabinet and was used by my mother for years.
