Fixing to give this a try.

My son has gotten me back into the Boyscout organization and in doing so I have started upgrading my old camping gear. Ever the planner I am already looking ahead several years to when I will be in a tent solo, cubs must have parent with them on camp outs Scouts are not, and hiking will be a major part of the experience. This lead me to outdoor shops where I came across my first camping hammock which led me to here. Hope to have my own set up soon and be trying it out. Oh btw, the name is Jeremy and I live in North Alabama.

My son is a Webelo - you will look back at the tent and wonder how it is hammocks aren't the norm. I can't imagine my boy pitching the last free standing tent I bought (and it is a nice tent too) by himself. And helping the other dad/scout teams wrestle theirs into submission after me and my son have our hammocks hung is about all my ego can handle. At 9yo I have total confidence that he can set his hammock safely without help. I recommend searching this site for setups that don't rely on knots (even old scouts reverse a sheetbend sometimes) - I find them quicker, safer, lighter, etc... Also, not sleeping on rocks, roots, and pinecones is a major plus. Figure out the underquilt thing and you'll be far on from fixin to and sleeping like a possum in a sack.

My son is a Tiger so I have 4 more years of Cubs to go. My whole family goes on camping trips now so I am thinking of a large hammock like the ENO Doublenest so the wife and daughter can double up. Not made up my mind yet on my own though. Until he turns 14 weight isnt that much of an issue. I will be honest though, if I had a setup now I might not make it to work tomorrow....

Welome to the forum. Glad to have another Scouter with us. There is a ton of information here. I am hoping to get our senior Boy Scouts patrol to try hammock camping this year.
