I'll tell you what, I bought my son a blue pad from wally world and could not believe how warm it was. Your shoulders will get cold but there are some fixes for that. Shug talks about it his vids for beginners. Welcome from Ohio! You don't need to spend a fortune to stay warm.

Welcome from Lawrenceville, GA. I'm Scoutmaster for our troop and have been hammocking for over a year now, and LOVE IT! Wished I'd started years ago. Anyway, we hiked and camped at Raven Cliff Falls (above Helen, GA) in January and temps never got out of the 30's. At night, temps were in the mid 20's and we had snow flurries. I did not use an underquilt. I used a closed cell foam sleeping pad, 20 degree sleeping bag and a couple hot hands in the bag. I was as warm and toasty as if I were in my own bed!

Welcome from Washington! You might want a little more that a tarp as an UQ if the temps are much below 50* down there right now.
